Chapter One
Jace
His life was a perfectly conducted orchestra. It had to be. He needed order and control. A schedule. Jace didn’t like surprises. He didn’t like it when things didn’t go the way he’d planned. He was beta to one of the only true shifter wolf packs in North America. And they were growing in size every time one of his wolves decided to knock up their mate.
Dom and Corey had a four-month-old baby girl named Hadley. Linc and Maddi were pregnant. She was due in the fall. And although they hadn’t told anyone yet, Baze and Pen had found out last week that they were finally expecting.
With every new announcement, Jace’s concerns multiplied, growing along with the girls’ ever-expanding waistbands. Baze may have been pack alpha, but Jace worried over their chosen family as much, if not more, than Baze did.
Jace was an eighteen-year-old guy whose idea of a good time was checking all the security cameras before going to bed. The ones at the house where he lived with Baze and Pen, as well as the ones he’d secretly installed at everyone else’s homes. He could never be too careful, and he didn’t fuck around when it came to his pack’s safety.
Anyone with half a brain could tell he was this way because of his childhood. Jace had grown up with a monster as his only parent, and it showed in everything Jace did. Insult to injury, four months ago his father had tried to kill him and everyone he loved. His home had been invaded by men armed to the gills who had shot at his friends, his family. There had been explosions, blood, and lots of destroyed furniture. They’d hidden the girls in Jace’s safe room, and he truly believed that was the only reason no one he cared about had been injured.
In the end, his pack had won. But that didn’t make the situation any less tragic.
“Hey, bubs, your brother is pulling in through the gates.” Penelope stepped out onto the patio, a sweet apologetic smile on her face. “I wanted to give you a heads-up.” She sat on the end of the lounger Jace was in, her hand going to his shin.
Pen was Baze’s mate. They’d reconnected after ten years apart during all the drama and turmoil with Jace’s father who had used Pen as a weapon, trying to force their pack to react without thinking. It hadn’t worked. Instead, Pen seemed to cement everyone into their roles, making them stronger. She’d shed intense light on shifter culture and life, telling them things that they never knew. She’d been the one to point out that Baze was their alpha and Jace their beta.
“Thanks for the warning.” Pen knew he didn’t like it when people showed up unannounced to their home. “He’s the fucking worst.”
“He’s your brother, and he loves you.” She shook her head, chastising him in the warm way that Jace would only ever accept from her.
At the first sign of his father’s impending attack, Baze and Jace had forced the whole pack to move into Jace’s mountain compound. There was safety in numbers, and having them spre
ad over the St. Leasing campus would have been a juvenile mistake. After they’d defeated Franklin, Baze and Pen stayed with Jace when the rest of the pack had gone back to their respective homes. Jace had asked his alpha to move in permanently. Jace didn’t think he could have returned to a life where he was always alone.
“He loves to be a pain in my ass.” Jace grinned, tightly, showing her he was only half kidding.
“You boys are going to have to start watching your language.” Pen shook her head as she rubbed her palm over her still-flat stomach. “This family is about to be overrun with toddlers, and they can’t learn words like fuck, shit, and damn before they learn to say momma.”
As Jasper stepped out of the still open sliding glass doors, Jace kept his smile and his eyes trained on Pen as he addressed his brother. “Please go the F away.”
She snorted, patting his knee and getting to her feet. “Good job, bubs.”
“Go the F away? Really? How ’bout, fuck no.” Jasper crossed his arms over his chest, receiving a swift pop to the side of the head from Pen on her way back into the house. “Dude, come out with us tonight.”
It was normal for Jace to be annoyed by any interruption because that was who he’d been raised to be. Controlled. Focused. Mechanical. Humanity still baffled him. But at the moment, his brother was interrupting the one small moment of peace he’d carved out for his afternoon. And when he said carved out, he meant he’d actually fucking scheduled it.
Pen, on the other hand, could never interrupt his peace. She only ever brought it.
“I’m taking back your key.” Jace relaxed back against the cushion of the lounger and closed his eyes, hoping Jasper would take the hint and leave him be. “This doesn’t constitute an emergency any more than last week when you were out of beer and the stores were all closed.”
Jasper, his twin in looks and blood only, lived in town with their friend Riley.
“Running out of beer in the middle of a party is always an emergency.” He sensed his brother walking forward, then sitting in the glider next to him. “And you would know that if you ever bothered to have any fun.”
“What are you talking about?” Jace frowned in annoyance. “I let you drag me to a party a few weeks ago.”
“That was three months ago, lame-ass.”
His eyes popped open. “For real?” Had it really been that long since he’d gone out with his friends? He could have sworn he’d suffered through a crowd of drunk teenagers only last month.
“Yeah, it was toward the end of baseball season. We won that intense game against Sacred Heart and you rode to the field with Riley so you didn’t have a choice but to come with us.” Jasper shook his head in mock despair. “You’ve gotta get that stick out of your ass, bro.”
Jace straightened in his chair, reaching for the table to grab his cup of hot lemon and honey tea. “I don’t have a stick up my ass.” Right before he could bring the drink to his lips, Jasper knocked it out of his hand and sent it sailing into the lush green grass of his yard. “What the fuck, man?” He clenched his fists, fighting the immediate urge to punch his brother in his smirking face. Corey, Dom’s mate and his counselor, had him working on his “responsive violence.”
And Jasper tested it, constantly.
“You’re sitting on your patio on a Friday evening in the middle of summer, sipping fucking tea.” Jasper stood, then squatted down and dumped him out of his lounger before Jace could react to stop him. “I can’t let you live like this, man, I can’t.”
Jasper let the chair fall back to the deck with a thud and then held his hands out in a halting gesture when Jace jumped to his feet and moved to charge him. “You’re my brother and I love you. But you need to spend a little time acting your age before it’s too late.”
Jace ground his molars, still seriously considering coldcocking his twin. “So you think coming over and pissing me off is the way to get me to do what you want?”
“Well, man, I’ve called and texted. I’ve tried to coax you as best I could, but that shit doesn’t work with your stubborn ass.” Jasper stepped up to the back door, opening it and then sweeping his arm wide to gesture inside. “Get changed, and let’s go have some fun before we’re too old and gray to enjoy it.”
Jace did not feel like partying with his brother and their best friend Riley. Going out sounded loud and exhausting, not to mention messy because drunk teenagers tended to spill a lot. But it’d been three months since the last time they’d forced him to spend time with people his own age. If he did this with them tonight, he could reasonably deduce he wouldn’t have to do it again. Ever.
Riley and Jasper were starting college in three months, which meant they’d be too busy and too far away to come over and hassle him. They’d both been accepted to the University of Northern Colorado to play ball, and the campus was two hours away. Which meant they’d never bother to drive down here for a townie party.
“Fine.” He knocked Jasper’s hand away when he held it out for a victorious high five. “But we’re calling a driver, I’m not going to be stuck at this party waiting on your drunk ass to get done hooking up with some random whore so I can drive you home.”
“Works for me.” He chuckled as he spoke, “But dude, it’s twenty nineteen. You can’t call chicks who enjoy sex whores.”
That was a valid point: although his brother did have a certain proclivity for bedding girls who were unavailable. He and his twin had gotten into their first real fight because Jasper had fucked a chick with a boyfriend. It’d caused drama and Jace had reacted without thought, doing the only thing he knew to stop Jasper from shifting in front of a bunch of humans and revealing their thousands-of-years-old secret.
He’d beaten him until he was unconscious.
All that seemed like it’d happened a lifetime ago. But in reality, it was a mere two years in the past.
“All right, fucker.” Jace put a smile on his face that he didn’t feel. “Let’s go have some fun.”
Jasper grinned like he’d handed him a billion dollars and the secret to life. Jace turned on his heel, heading up his floating staircase to get changed for this godforsaken party. If him going out and drinking a few beers made his twin that stupid happy, then it was the least he could do.
After all, Jasper had killed their father for him without blinking.
Chapter Two
Axie
She wrapped her hair around the scalding-hot curling iron, then pulled it straight to make sure her locks cascaded down her back in waves and not ringlets. It was Friday night, and she had a party to get to. It would be the same people, the same drama. But what was the alternative? Stay in and run the risk of seeing her father?
No fucking thank you.
Three more months in this stupid town and then she’d be free. She’d been accepted to the University of Nevada the middle of her senior year and to date, it had been the happiest day of her miserable life.
She set her curling iron down on the marble countertop, grabbing a stack of beaded bracelets and sliding them up her wrist.
Sure. From the outside looking in, Alexandra Contreau had a picture-perfect existence. The big house, the wealthy family, the formidable father. She had a closet full of the most expensive clothes a girl could want, and a car that would make most people drool in envy. But to her, it was all tainted since it came at a price she was no longer willing to pay.
Axie moved from her bathroom to her large walk-in closet, searching through her collection of tight dresses. It’s not as if there would be anyone at the party that she wanted to impress. She wasn’t sure why she was wasting her time looking for the perfect outfit.
She rolled her eyes at her own pathetic routine before blindly grabbing a short red sundress off a black velvet hanger and pulling it down her body. She knew what guys saw when they looked at her: long legs, a rack a bit over a handful, and a face many described as beautiful. Not bragging, but she knew all the boys she’d gone to school with would give their left nut to have her. A
nd to be honest, more than a few of them had.
But that was all before. When she was still playing the game, still distracting herself.
As she stepped into a pair of nude wedges, her bedroom door flew open. Her father felt the need to make an entrance, no matter how few people were around to see it. Maybe it was his shifter nature, or maybe he was just a pompous asshole. She used to think Miguel Contreau was larger than life. But over the years, he’d shrunk to be less than human.
Always, petty and reaching.
“Alexandra, good, I caught you before you left.” His tone was as crisp as his linen suit that didn’t have one single wrinkle in it. He refused to call her anything other than her given name, and he always scrunched his nose in disgust when anyone called her Axie. “I need to speak with you.”
She straightened, tossing her hair out of her way as she grabbed a studded leather clutch off her ornate antique vanity. “Yeah, well, better luck tomorrow.”
As she went to step past him, he grabbed her arm, pulling her back into her room. His grip tightened to the point of pain, and it took every ounce of strength she had not to let it show. Instead, jaw clenched, she steeled her spine, slipping a haughty mask over her face. Her sheer defiance was in her stance, even when she kept quiet.
“You will listen to me, and then you will follow my instructions to the letter.” He shoved her down onto her bed, and there was no way to look collected as she landed hard. “I have word that Jace Franklin, Franklin’s son, is at the party you’re no doubt on your way to tonight.”
Franklin.
She’d heard than name nonstop her whole life. Her father had always referred to the insufferable asshole as a “work associate.” But she wasn’t stupid, not anymore. She knew her father did more than defend criminals in the courtroom.
“Yeah, and what does that have to do with me?” She knew that Mr. Franklin was a bad guy, like she now knew her father was as well. And as far as “associate” went, she was pretty sure the term he was actually looking for was frenemy. Franklin was the boss and her father had always been jealous of the large, bald, sexist prick.
